Portfolio Story- Theodore Roosevelt HS Marching Band

At some schools, marching bands are considered an elite class. The Ohio State University Marching Band is highly competitve. But, in high school it’s not how highly you are regarded, it’s the friends you make and the experiences you have.
Students are rich, poor; black, white; popular and geeks. But all this is overlooked by the music, passion for the game and most importantly, the people. Some cannot be interupted during the game while others pay no attention. Some are so into the music and being in sinc with the game that they don’t appear to be having any fun. And some come close to making out in the stands. No matter the differences, the common bond these students share is that they are making friends they will have for life.

Band members pile onto one of three busses that transports them to games. Students often talk to firends, play games on their cell phones and play the occasional game of Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Sections cluster together on the practice field before a game.

Taylor Polatas blushes as the entire band turns and sings “Happy Birthday to You” during the first quarter.

Students play in the stands, not paying attention to the game in front of them.

Amanda Cross (left), Cassidy Battles and Andrew Alderson joke and try to keep warm.

Eric Mohnacky can’t be bothered during a game and is always the first to stand and cheer after a good play.

Noah Plymale plays along for the crowd during the third quarter.

Meredith Burns (left) and Sequoyah Madison try to warm their hands during the first cold game of the season. By the next week everyone had gloves.

Band director Andrew Sundman warms up the band before the halftime show.

Patrick Tregoning lines up in formation before entering the field.
